What to buy? How to rig? Where to fish?

New to the forum, and new to fishing. Just bought a Sea Hunt Ultra 211. Live in SE Houston, normally put in around Clear Lake/Kemah and Galveston.

Don't know a whole lot about fishing, as I'm just getting into it. I am more familiar with spinning reels than baitcasters.

    Specifically looking for:
    1. Rod and reel combos. Not looking to break the bank, but don't want to buy cheap stuff either.
    2. Specific set ups/rigs that work well for reds and flounder in the area.
    3. What to stock my tackle box with.
    4. Good spots for reds and flounder in my neck of the woods.

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

    -Tommy

Welcome aboard SeaHuntTW, I too am sorta new to the salt water fishing and could use some of the same information. Hope you find the board as helpful and friendly as I have. There is some great guys/gals on here that are most willing to assist others. I do need to get out into the salt more but I just don't go when it is so dad gum hot and with all the thunderstorms around.

Are you looking to to fish with artificial bait or live bait?

RR combo is up to you and what your comfortable with. I prefer bait casting reels. Though I wanted to learn and fish with bait casters from watching bass fishing shows. Lol

Not sure what price range is for fishing gear. What I have found out is buy the best you can afford. That's not always the highest dollar RR combo. Get what your comfortable with and build your confidence.

Is there a certain reel manufacture you favor?

6 1/2-7ft rod is a good choice on rods.

I am originally from Charleston, SC. Out there, the Reds seem to like live bait (cut mullet, shrimp, minnows). I guess I'm interested in what seems to work best. Mainly interested in reds and flounder. Also, wondering how to rig it. As I said, new to fishing in general, so looking to learn as much as I can. Also, wondering some good spots to go looking for those species...

You've got a Bass Pro Shop at the corner of Loop 8 and 288. For saltwater, I prefer spinning reel combos. You say you don't want "cheap", but I used the cheapest rod/reel combo I could find for about 10 years without a single problem. Largest fish caught on it was a 6 foot Hammer Head Shark.

I love braid for fishing line ... 60# test should be sufficient for anything you'll catch off the Texas coastline.

I love a top water hit, and salt water is no different. Definitely have some LARGE Zara Spook type lures.
For flounder, my favorite presentation was very simple. A large silver spoon with a ten inch white trailer of leather shoe lace.
Of course, when they're actively chasing bait pods ... you'll want large rattle traps.

For me going fishing is just about getting outdoors. Catching fish is just a bonus.
