These situations usually don't turn out good. Hope I am wrong.
San Luis pass takes a few lives EVERY summer. Some of the strongest currents I've ever felt were there. Every step you take you can feel the sand being sucked out from under your feet as you move. I've gotten to where I won't go much more than knee deep at that place.
We camped out there a few years ago and there were helicopters overhead all night with the spot lights on. Learned the next day a man was trying to get to his son who had been pulled under and neither on resurfaced till the next day. Sad deal...

Yes, the water at the pass is dangerous.
Seen plenty folks there being careless or naïve of the dangers of fishing there.

it's like a bad dream and you keep hoping to wake up and it did not happen,
it has been a year and 6 months sincemy baby girl died and it still haunts me
