I have a lot of cast iron that needs to be cleaned just like that now beautiful pot. I guess I need to pick one out and try it. I know you told me before that a gas grill would work, I just have not gotten around to it yet.

How do I do that with my gas grill? I have two cast iron skillets that need to be brought back to life.

Take the skillets over to Ben's and get to talking to him, I mean listening to him, and then just pull the ole switcha rue.
Clean it best you can and put it on the pit, the heat will burn off most of the stuff, if not clean or good enough put it back on until it comes out good. then season the skillet

Rod and KingTut - I use my 3 burner weber gas grill and turn the middle burner off. I run the temp up to 400 to 450 degrees. I use a small putty knife and scrap as much "stuff" off the inside and outside as possible.
Then I use LARD. I use a paper towel to put a coat of lard all over the inside and outside and put it in the midde of my grill and cook it for one hour. Take it off the grill and sit it on a wood cutting board and see what kind of shape it is in and let it cool a little bit and if need be keep scraping and cleaning and give it another coating of lard and put it back on the grill. Sometimes you have to do this 3 or 4 times before it is clean and ready to use. When you are all done, always put a light coat of lard on your cast iron then you can store it whereever you want. When you get ready to cook with it it will be ready to use. |
