I can do alot of things, but transmission repairs is not one of them. Would anyone care to give a wag at what it might cost? I have a 1995 4x4 Tahoe with 225k miles that will not shift into overdrive.

I did one on a 98 z71 truck several years ago. It was a 4l60e which had a whole lot more wires and junk, it took me 8 hours to pull it and put it. Not bad really but a pain in the but with 4x4 stuff and wires. I bought a gm service tranny from gm for 1575.00 to add in the case of tranny fluid and there went $1600.lol

Going through the dealer is an option if you can put it in your self. At the time they offered a 3 year 55,000 mile warranty which covered them R&R it if it failed. If you are feeling bold that might be the way to go.

Times are tough right now for shops so call around and get prices. Those are fairly simple trannys and very inexpesive to rebuild if there is no hard parts damage. I would guess maybe $1000 to $1200 at a trans shop. Good luck

Oh I forgot the original one broke at 95,000 miles due to a known gm defect. Guess what, they weren't going to fix it.....Got 2 Fords sittin in the driveway ;)

The gm service tranny still works with about 90,000 miles on it.

A 700r4 usually last between 200 and 250kmiles. Rebuilding it is an option but costly. Buying new is costly, personally, I would buy a used tranny (preferably th400due to toughness). A 5.7 350, which is probly wat u have, is good between 250 and 300k miles. I wouldn't spend too much on the tranny and then the motor blow. Just my opinion though

I'm not trying to put ur tahoe down. Just trying to give my point of view. The truck is worth around 3k. I'm actually lookin for one for my wife is how I know the value. If u spend 1400 bucks on it, is it worth it to u?

I understand what your saying. Yes it is worth it to me. I was quoted $1600.
I do not want monthly car payments (daughter is 2nd semester UT student). This vehicle gets me to work and home everyday, pulls my boat and lowboy. It's been taken care of, is in good shape and cheaper than a monthly car payment. But again, I hear you and some day will be shopping for a replacement. Maybe I'll pass this one down to my son. Are you a shade tree mechanic? Do you think you could pull your own tranny. I had a trans go out on me on the way to houston from college station one time. I pulled it out took it to the transmission shop we used and had them rebuild it. I want to say with a new torque converter I spent $600. That is an option too if you think you can do it. The kit to rebuild yours is maybe $170 for the shims, steels, gaskets and fitler. Add in any hard parts that might be worn and I bet you could get it done for about $700-$800. Big difference if you can do it yourself and have the tools to do it.

I understand, payments are a pain in the neck
